ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian about Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic outreach aimed at facilitating peace talks between the United States and Iran during a phone call lasting over an hour on Saturday.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders held detailed discussions on the evolving regional situation and efforts to reduce tensions. Pakistan is playing a central role in mediation efforts, working in coordination with Turkiye and Egypt.
The prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements led by himself, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir to engage the US, Gulf, and Islamic countries in creating a conducive environment for dialogue.
He also conveyed strong international support for Pakistan’s peace initiative and expressed optimism about finding a collective path to end hostilities. PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of continued Israeli attacks on Iran, including recent strikes on civilian infrastructure, and expressed solidarity with the Iranian people. He also extended condolences over the loss of more than 1,900 lives.
President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s sincere efforts and emphasized the importance of trust-building to enable dialogue. He praised Islamabad’s constructive role in promoting peace and thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to host foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt in Islamabad from March 29-30 to discuss regional tensions and peace initiatives. The talks, initially planned in Turkiye, were shifted to Islamabad due to Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role.
Officials say indirect communication between Washington and Tehran is ongoing through Pakistan, with a 15-point US framework currently under Iranian consideration. The United Nations and China have also expressed support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
The development has raised expectations that Islamabad may soon host direct talks between the US and Iran as diplomatic momentum builds.
