ISLAMABAD (MNN); A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Saturday evening, sending tremors across Islamabad, several cities in Punjab, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, hours after multiple earthquakes hit Balochistan.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake occurred at 6:35pm with its epicentre in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 178 kilometres.
Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mansehra, Shangla, Swat, Chakwal, Abbottabad, Taxila, Haripur, Buner, Lahore, Faisalabad and Attock.
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said district administrations and emergency teams were inspecting buildings in affected areas, while provincial and district control rooms remained on high alert. Rescue 1122 confirmed that no casualties or property damage had been reported following the evening earthquake.
Earlier in the day, Balochistan experienced three earthquakes. Two stronger tremors measuring 5.2 and 4.3 magnitude struck Barkhan and nearby districts, injuring three people. Two labourers were hurt after a shop roof collapsed in Musakhail, while another man sustained injuries when his house collapsed near Kingri.
A third earthquake measuring 4.2 magnitude was recorded later in the evening, with its epicentre northwest of Kohlu.
Emergency teams and local authorities launched rescue operations in the affected areas, where cracks were reported in several mud houses, forcing many residents to move into temporary shelters. The region has experienced a series of earthquakes in recent days, including tremors on Friday and earlier this week.
