ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has promoted Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army, to the rank of a four-star general and appointed him as the Commander National Strategic Command (CNSC), the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced on Friday.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated General Aamer Raza on his promotion and appointment, expressing confidence in his leadership and wishing him success in carrying out the country’s strategic responsibilities.
General Aamer Raza is a highly decorated military officer who has previously been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Basalat in recognition of his distinguished service and gallantry.
The post of Commander National Strategic Command was established under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, introduced last year, as part of major reforms to Pakistan’s military command structure. Under the new framework, the CNSC assumes responsibility for the country’s strategic and nuclear command, a role previously held by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), whose office was abolished following the constitutional changes.
The amendment also created the office of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) to ensure a unified command structure across Pakistan’s armed forces. Under the law, the appointment, reappointment or extension of the CNSC is made solely on the recommendation of the CDF and cannot be challenged before any court.
Following the enactment of the 27th Constitutional Amendment last year, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who also serves as the Chief of Army Staff, became Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
