ISLAMABAD (MNN); Low-budget horror film “Obsession”, directed by first-time filmmaker Curry Barker, has emerged as one of the biggest box office success stories in cinema history, grossing more than $400 million worldwide against a production budget of just $750,000 to $1 million.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year before its theatrical release in May, has become a global word-of-mouth phenomenon, particularly among Generation Z audiences, driving its impressive commercial success.
According to industry analysts, Obsession is on track to become one of the most profitable films ever made in terms of return on investment. Bruce Nash, founder of film industry tracking website The Numbers, said the movie’s box office performance relative to its modest budget is unprecedented.
With global ticket sales approaching $430 million, the film has already surpassed the legendary 1999 horror hit “The Blair Witch Project”, which earned around $250 million from a budget of approximately $600,000.
While blockbuster franchises such as Avatar, Titanic and Frozen generated much higher total revenues, they were produced with budgets hundreds of times larger than Barker’s debut feature.
The success of Obsession has also eclipsed another breakout horror film of 2026, “Backrooms”, directed by 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons, which has earned nearly $360 million worldwide on a budget of about $10 million.
The remarkable performance of both films highlights the growing popularity of horror among younger audiences and signals a new trend of successful social media creators transitioning into mainstream filmmaking.
Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan described the achievements of these young directors as “very encouraging for the future of cinema.”
Originally from Alabama, Barker moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue a career in filmmaking. Before his breakthrough, he worked various jobs, including at Starbucks and in the film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, while producing comedy sketches and horror shorts with creative partner Cooper Tomlinson on their YouTube channel “That’s a Bad Idea.”
The story of Obsession follows a young man who uses a mystical charm known as the “One Wish Willow” to make his longtime friend fall in love with him. However, the wish unleashes disturbing and violent consequences, exploring themes of obsession, toxic relationships, consent and modern dating culture.
Hollywood studio Focus Features, a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, acquired the film’s distribution rights for $15 million following its Toronto premiere, turning it into one of the industry’s most profitable investments.
Following the film’s extraordinary success, Barker has already begun work on several new projects, including his second feature film “Anything But Ghosts” and a new adaptation of the classic 1974 horror film “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
