A powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Hunan, China, has resulted in 21 fatalities and 61 injuries, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The incident led President Xi Jinping to call for a comprehensive investigation into the cause.
The blast occurred on Monday around 4:40 pm in Liuyang, which falls under the administration of Changsha and is known as a major hub for fireworks production.
Footage circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky over a mountainous landscape. Reuters confirmed that the visuals were from Changsha and were shared online on May 4.
Video released by Xinhua revealed extensive destruction at the site, including collapsed structures and scattered debris. Emergency response teams—nearly 500 personnel along with three rescue robots—were deployed, using a “human machine coordinated approach” to carry out grid-based search operations.
Authorities identified two black powder storage warehouses at the facility as significant hazards. Nearby residents were evacuated, with officials setting up a 1 km rescue zone and a 3 km controlled perimeter.
The explosion took place at Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company. According to state media, the individual responsible for the company has been detained, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
Xi called for a swift inquiry into the incident and emphasized strict accountability. He also directed officials to improve risk assessment and hazard management in critical industries, strengthen public safety measures, and ensure the protection of lives and property.
China exported $1.14 billion worth of fireworks last year, accounting for more than two-thirds of global sales, according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity.
Xi also ordered authorities to strengthen risk screening and hazard control in key industries, enhance public safety and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.
Xi often issues “important instructions” to local officials after major accidents and disasters with fatalities.
Last week, he urged a nationwide upgrade in China’s disaster response capacity.
Xi also issued instructions after a fire tore through several residential towers in Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court complex in November killing 168 people.
