WASHINGTON (MNN); US President Donald Trump was reported safe after a shooting scare disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, prompting a swift evacuation of top officials and guests.
According to law enforcement sources, a shooter opened fire inside the venue, though no immediate injuries were reported. Security agencies, including the Secret Service, quickly secured the area as panic spread, with hundreds of attendees taking cover under tables.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where the event is traditionally held. One suspect has been arrested, Trump later confirmed.
The banquet hall, filled with journalists, celebrities, and political figures awaiting the president’s speech, was evacuated as National Guard personnel moved in and security was tightened both inside and outside the building.
Authorities sealed off nearby streets, while helicopters hovered overhead and police vehicles flooded the area. Attendees were initially held inside the venue as officials worked to secure the situation.
Jeanine Pirro said she was escorted out after hearing gunshots, adding that the Secret Service had taken full control of the hotel. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Jeffery Carroll were reported to be heading to the scene.
Authorities have yet to release full details of the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
