WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD: Donald Trump said an agreement to end the Iran war could be reached soon, adding that talks between the United States and Iran may take place over the weekend. He also suggested he could visit Islamabad if a deal is signed there.
A 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel has come into effect, and Trump urged the Iran-backed Hezbollah to respect the truce. He expressed optimism that the war “should be ending pretty soon.” The conflict, which began on February 28 with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, has caused major disruptions to global oil markets and raised fears of a global economic slowdown.
A Pakistani source involved in mediation said progress has been made through backchannel diplomacy. The two sides may first sign a memorandum of understanding, followed by a comprehensive agreement within 60 days.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role, with army chief Asim Munir reportedly holding talks in Tehran and helping resolve key issues. Oil prices dropped on hopes of a deal, though the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed. The disruption has significantly reduced global oil shipments, particularly affecting supplies to China.
Meanwhile, Britain and France are leading efforts with around 40 countries to restore navigation through the strait once conditions improve. Trump said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and plans to invite them to Washington for further talks.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high. The Lebanese army reported Israeli shelling in southern villages shortly after the truce began, while Israel cited ongoing Hezbollah activity.
A major sticking point in negotiations is Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. has proposed a 20-year suspension, while Iran has suggested a shorter halt of three to five years. Tehran is also seeking sanctions relief, while Washington wants limits on enriched uranium stockpiles. There are indications both sides may reach a compromise, including the possible removal of part of Iran’s highly enriched uranium.
