WASHINGTON: At least 624 US military personnel have been wounded since President Donald Trump ordered military strikes against Iran in February, according to the Pentagon’s latest casualty update released on July 25, the BBC reported.
The figures show that 417 injuries were recorded under Operation Epic Fury, while another 207 personnel were wounded during Overseas Operations.
Although the United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire in April and signed a Memorandum of Understanding in June, hostilities have continued, with both sides carrying out further attacks.
Casualty revisions raise transparency concerns
The Pentagon recently updated its casualty records, reclassifying four service members who were previously listed as killed during Operation Epic Fury and moving them to the death toll for Overseas Operations.
According to the Pentagon’s Defence Analysis Casualty System, Operation Epic Fury had been listed as having 18 fatalities and 482 wounded as recently as Tuesday, BBC News reported. By Thursday, however, the death toll had been reduced to 14, with the four deceased personnel reassigned to the Overseas Operations category.
The Overseas Operations records, which cover casualties from July 7, 2026, now include those four deaths as their only fatalities.
Critics question record changes
The unexplained revisions to both the casualty and fatality figures have drawn criticism from officials and lawmakers, who argue that the changes undermine transparency.
“The administration seems to have a real hard time being honest about what is going on — not just about casualties, but about the whole war in general,” said Lt Gen Ben Hodges, who commanded US forces in Europe during Trump’s first administration.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, a frequent critic of Trump, also questioned the changes, calling the division of casualties into separate categories an “absurd ruse” in a post on X.
Responding to the criticism, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said on X that the changing figures were the result of “temporary data disruptions.”
