WASHINGTON: Pakistan has reiterated its support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transitional justice process, stressing that respect for Syria’s sovereignty is essential to achieving lasting peace and stability in the war-torn country.
Speaking at a United Nations Arria-Formula meeting on Transitional Justice and Missing Persons in Syria on Tuesday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said efforts to address the legacy of the conflict should remain under Syrian leadership, with international assistance playing a supporting role.
“National ownership, reconciliation and inclusive institutions are essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in Syria,” he said.
The ambassador welcomed measures taken by the Syrian government, including the establishment of the National Commission for Transitional Justice and the National Commission for Missing Persons, as well as the drafting of a transitional justice law.
“Effective cooperation between Syrian national institutions and relevant international mechanisms should complement nationally led efforts while fully respecting Syria’s sovereignty and national ownership,” he stated.
Ambassador Ahmad said transitional justice was crucial not only for addressing the consequences of years of conflict but also for rebuilding Syrian society.
“Transitional justice is vital to promoting reconciliation, restoring trust, strengthening social cohesion, and addressing the legitimate expectations of victims and their families,” he said.
Pakistan’s remarks come as the international community continues discussions on Syria’s political transition, accountability for past abuses, the issue of missing persons and the country’s reconstruction.
Reaffirming Islamabad’s position, the envoy said sustainable peace in Syria could only be achieved through a process led by Syrians themselves rather than externally imposed arrangements, with international support provided in a manner that fully respects the country’s sovereignty.
Expressing Pakistan’s continued support for Syria, Ambassador Ahmad said the international community should assist the Syrian government and its people in advancing peace, stability, reconciliation and reconstruction.
“Pakistan would continue to stand with Syria in its pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future,” he added.
