AI code-generation startup Cursor, co-founded by Pakistani-born entrepreneur Sualeh Asif, is reportedly set for a $60 billion acquisition agreement with Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX, according to multiple reports.
Cursor is part of a growing wave of Silicon Valley AI firms—alongside OpenAI and Anthropic—that have gained rapid adoption among developers by using artificial intelligence to automate software coding tasks.
Under the reported arrangement, SpaceX said in a post on X that Cursor has granted it the option to acquire the company later this year for $60 billion. If SpaceX chooses not to proceed with the purchase, it would instead pay $10 billion for its collaboration with the startup.“The combination of Cursor’s leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX’s million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world’s most useful models,” the company said.
Cursor was co-founded under its parent company Anysphere by Sualeh Asif and three MIT classmates. Asif, originally from Karachi, studied at Nixor College before attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and represented Pakistan in the International Mathematical Olympiad from 2016 to 2018. The startup, which develops an AI-powered code editor, has seen rapid growth and now reports more than $1 billion in annualised revenue, making it one of the fastest-growing companies in the AI sector.
Cursor reached a valuation of $29.3 billion in November 2025 after raising $2.3 billion in a funding round led by Accel and Coatue. Today, the platform is reportedly used by millions of developers across around 50,000 enterprises, including major firms such as Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, and Shopify, to generate and edit software code.
Former federal IT minister Umar Saif praised Asif’s achievement, calling him a role model for Pakistani youth and highlighting his journey from a middle-class background in Karachi to founding a globally influential AI company at a young age.
