JAKARTA (Reuters) :Indonesia’s communications ministry has issued a stern warning to Meta Platforms for failing to curb the spread of online gambling and disinformation on its platforms. The warning followed an unscheduled visit by Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid to Meta’s operational office in Jakarta.
According to the ministry, Meta showed a low level of compliance with Indonesian regulations addressing disinformation, online gambling, defamation, and hate speech across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Authorities said Meta had taken action on only 28.47% of flagged content related to online gambling and disinformation.
“Disinformation, defamation, and hate content threaten lives in Indonesia, yet Meta has allowed them to persist,” Hafid said. The ministry has urged Meta to strengthen its content moderation systems and accelerate the removal of illegal and harmful material.
