Lahore: The Shaista Ikramullah Human Rights Education Centre (SIHREC) was officially inaugurated in Lahore on Tuesday, marking a significant step toward strengthening human rights education in Pakistan.
The centre, established with the support of the European Union (EU) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is envisioned as a hub for learning, dialogue, and youth leadership on human rights issues.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, EU Ambassador to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis highlighted the critical role of human rights education in fostering inclusive and democratic societies. He reaffirmed the EU’s longstanding partnership with Pakistan in promoting social justice, governance, and civic engagement. The initiative is part of the EU-funded “HuqooqePakistanII” programme, which focuses on empowering young people and strengthening institutions to translate human rights principles into practical action.
Officials present at the event described SIHREC as a vital platform for capacity-building, research, and civic dialogue aimed at nurturing informed and rights-conscious citizens.
