At least 30 people were injured after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck north-eastern Japan on Monday night, prompting thousands to evacuate their homes. The quake, recorded at 23:15 local time (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50 km (31 mi), occurred approximately 80 km off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.
Tsunami warnings were issued but have since been lifted, with waves reaching up to 70 cm (27 in).Several train services have been suspended, and thousands of households are without power.
Authorities have warned that stronger aftershocks may occur over the coming days and urged residents to remain vigilant for at least a week.
