Russia launched a large-scale wave of ballistic missile and drone attacks across several Ukrainian cities, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens, according to officials cited by BBC News.
The strikes claimed four lives in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, while an elderly woman was killed in the capital, Kyiv. Two people died in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, and another fatality was reported in Sumy in northeastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the assault on Kyiv as “one of the most massive ballistic attacks” since Russia began its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Late on Sunday, Ukraine’s navy said five people were killed after Russian missiles struck a Turkish-owned civilian cargo vessel transporting grain in the Black Sea. Russia has not commented on the incident, BBC News reported.
Ukraine also said it targeted three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and struck three oil storage facilities in Russia’s southern Stavropol region. Zelensky said the facilities were targets that “finance Russian aggression”.
Several areas around the Kyiv region came under attack overnight. Ukraine’s military said its air defence systems intercepted 18 of the 41 missiles launched toward the capital, in addition to shooting down 108 drones.
Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said a postal terminal on the outskirts of the city was hit, killing four men aged between 24 and 62. Several others sustained serious injuries.
In a message posted on Telegram, Zelensky said Russia had “used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine” over the past week.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which transports Kazakhstan’s Caspian oil to Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, said its terminal had also come under attack.
According to the consortium, two oil tankers were damaged, forcing the suspension of oil loading operations. It added that no injuries or oil spills were reported.
Ukraine’s air force said the latest assault on Kyiv involved multiple Russian weapons systems, including Iskander ballistic missiles, hypersonic Zircon missiles, and 125 drones.
