Italian authorities have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the deaths of four Pakistani farm workers who were found inside a burnt-out minivan in southern Italy, according to local media reports.
The charred vehicle was discovered at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara in Calabria, a region known for its extensive agricultural activity and large migrant workforce.
According to Corriere della Sera, surveillance footage from the petrol station showed two individuals blocking the vanâs doors from the outside before pouring a liquid inside the vehicle. The footage reportedly captured the vehicle catching fire while the suspects fled the scene.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and later recovered four bodies from inside the minivan.
âThis is definitely murder, we just have to work out the details,â local police chief Antonio Borelli was quoted as saying.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and possible motives behind the attack.
The newspaper reported that the area has witnessed 14 arson incidents involving vehicles transporting Pakistani migrants in recent months. Authorities believe tensions among migrant groups over access to agricultural jobs, residency documentation and accommodation may have contributed to the unrest.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue gathering evidence and questioning suspects.
