Pakistan is set to further its diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the Iran–US confrontation as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar participates in a high-level United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting scheduled for May 26, diplomatic sources said.
The session, convened under China’s presidency of the Security Council, is taking place at a time of heightened regional tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also been invited, although Tehran has not yet confirmed his attendance.
The ministerial debate will focus on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centred International System,” according to the programme circulated at the UN. The meeting will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Diplomatic sources said Dar will travel to New York on May 25 after accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on his visit to China.
Foreign ministers from several countries, including Cambodia, Costa Rica, Bahrain, Turkmenistan, the Czech Republic, Colombia, and Azerbaijan, are also expected to attend the meeting.
All five permanent UNSC members — the United States, China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom — are expected to be present, with the US likely represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, though Washington has not officially confirmed.
Pakistani officials have repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution of tensions in the Middle East, stressing the importance of adherence to the UN Charter and multilateral diplomacy.
