DAVOS (MNN); US President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Canada against entering into a trade agreement with China, threatening to impose a 100 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods if such a deal materialises.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump cautioned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that closer economic ties with Beijing would pose serious risks to Canada. He claimed that China could severely damage Canadaās businesses, social structure and overall way of life.
Trump said that any agreement between Ottawa and Beijing would result in immediate punitive trade measures by Washington, including a blanket tariff on Canadian exports to the United States.
Referring to Carneyās recent visit to China, where he described Beijing as a āreliable and predictable partner,ā Trump accused China of attempting to use Canada as a conduit to bypass US trade restrictions.
āIf Governor Carney believes Canada can serve as a transit point for Chinese goods entering the United States, he is mistaken,ā Trump said, warning against what he termed tariff evasion.
Relations between the United States and Canada have strained further in recent days. On Thursday, Trump withdrew Canadaās invitation to join his Board of Peace initiative, which aims to address global conflicts.
The move followed Carneyās remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticised powerful nations for weaponising economic integration and using tariffs as tools of political pressure.
