A company in Soja, Okayama Prefecture in Japan has developed a compact and easy-to-install prayer room designed to help tourist destinations and businesses better accommodate Muslim visitors.
The product, named “Prayer Space,” was created by a staff member of OM Kiki Co., a company that manufactures welfare and other equipment. The idea originated after the developer traveled within the prefecture with a Muslim friend from Malaysia who struggled to find a suitable place to pray.
The company began selling the product in December.
The wooden structure is 180 centimeters in height with a floor area of 150 centimeters squared. It includes a waterproof and easy-to-clean mat, as Muslims are required to perform ablution (washing hands, feet, face and hair) before prayers.
It also features a rotatable qibla indicator on the ceiling to show the direction of Makkah.
According to a survey of 107 Muslim visitors to Japan, 72% of men and 79% of women said they prioritize the availability of a prayer space when choosing travel destinations.
“The availability of a prayer space can be a very important factor in choosing a travel destination,” the developer said.
He added that the goal is to increase the number of accessible prayer spaces, making travel easier and improving inclusivity in local areas, starting with Okayama.
