ISLAMABAD: International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has commended Pakistan for its strong implementation of the IMF-supported programme, crediting it with helping the country maintain macroeconomic stability and restore investor confidence. Her remarks came after a meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in Washington, DC, held on the sidelines of the IMF–World Bank Spring Meetings.
In a post on X, Georgieva noted that “strong programme implementation has helped Pakistan maintain macroeconomic stability and build confidence,” while emphasizing that sound policies and deeper structural reforms remain essential for sustaining growth and improving public welfare.
According to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook 2026, Pakistan’s economic growth is projected at 3.6% for fiscal year 2026, slightly below the government’s 4.2% target. The revision reflects broader global economic challenges, including instability stemming from the ongoing Gulf conflict.
Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has also acknowledged Pakistan’s progress in fiscal consolidation and macroeconomic stability, noting that reforms remain broadly aligned with IMF programme requirements. In March, Pakistan and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement (SLA), a critical step toward unlocking approximately $1.2 billion in funding.
Once approved by the IMF Executive Board, the country is expected to receive $1 billion under the Extended Fund Facility and an additional $210 million through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.
This would bring total disbursements under the current programme to $4.5 billion.Under the broader $7 billion programme, the IMF has advised Pakistan to maintain a tight, data-driven monetary policy to control inflation and strengthen external financial buffers.
The Ministry of Finance stated that Georgieva’s comments reflect increasing international recognition of Pakistan’s reform efforts and its commitment to economic stability through prudent policymaking.
