Web Desk (MNN); Egypt’s National Elections Authority on Saturday announced the results of the final 49 parliamentary seats, completing an election process that began more than three months ago and securing President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the super-majority required to amend the constitution.
The declaration of the remaining seats had been delayed due to repeat voting in several constituencies where earlier results were annulled.
While the Elections Authority did not disclose the political affiliations of the winning candidates, the outcome is not expected to significantly change the overall balance of power in parliament, which remains firmly dominated by supporters of President Sisi.
According to Egypt’s State Information Service, opposition parties and independent candidates are projected to win 158 of the 568 elected seats, representing around 28 percent of the chamber. The president also has the authority to appoint an additional five percent of lawmakers, bringing the total number of seats to 596.
Under Egypt’s constitution, a two-thirds majority in parliament is required to pass constitutional amendments.
