TEHRAN/WASHINGTON (MNN); Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated once again after the US military announced strikes on targets in southern Iran, saying the action was in response to an alleged Iranian drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Committee, strongly condemned the US action, accusing President Donald Trump of abandoning diplomatic commitments.
In a statement posted on X, Azizi said Trump had “shown he has no commitment to the principles of negotiation or a ceasefire,” adding that the latest military action represented a “reckless violation” that would ultimately result in “retreat and regret” for the United States.
“The blame game does not work anymore,” he wrote.
Iranian officials have so far released limited details regarding the reported US strikes. However, authorities reiterated that Iran remains determined to close the Strait of Hormuz to vessels that fail to coordinate with Iranian authorities, reflecting Tehran’s continued hardline position over security in the strategic waterway.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in a statement carried by Iran’s ISNA news agency, claimed that its naval and air defence units successfully neutralised the US attack targeting Sirik Island in southern Iran.
The IRGC warned that the attack “will not go unanswered,” saying Iran’s response would be “swift and decisive” at a time and place of its own choosing. It further cautioned that “any new foolishness will be met with a harsh response.”
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had conducted precision strikes against Iranian missile storage sites, drone facilities and coastal radar installations.
According to CENTCOM, the operation followed what it described as Iran’s June 25 one-way drone attack on the commercial vessel M/V Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military alleged that Iran’s actions constituted an “unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping” and violated the ceasefire, while also threatening freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
CENTCOM said US forces continue to coordinate safe passage for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and remain deployed in the region to ensure compliance with the existing agreement involving Iran.
Separately, Iranian media reported hearing a loud explosion in the Sirik area of southern Iran, although officials said the exact cause of the blast had not yet been determined.
The reports emerged shortly after President Trump hinted at possible retaliation over the reported attack on a cargo ship. Asked whether Iran would face consequences, Trump responded, “You’ll find out.”
