ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal General Asim Munir are expected to travel to Switzerland as Pakistan continues its mediation efforts in the ongoing US-Iran peace process.
Sources said the prime minister and the field marshal are likely to depart Islamabad late Saturday night, while the interior minister has already reached Tehran and is holding consultations with the Iranian leadership to facilitate progress in the dialogue process.
The Foreign Office (FO) announced on Saturday that technical-level talks, following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will take place in Buergenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Representatives from the United States and Iran, along with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, are expected to participate in the discussions. The FO reiterated that Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role in advancing the understandings reached under the Islamabad agreement.
Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance said he plans to travel to Switzerland soon for the talks, while US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are already present there for negotiations. Speaking to Fox News, Vance said discussions with Iran were progressing positively.
Iran has also confirmed that it will send a delegation to Switzerland. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran intends to ensure that all commitments under the agreement are implemented and stressed that any failure to fulfil obligations could place the entire deal at risk.
The 14-point agreement was signed on Thursday by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signing as a mediator. The accord outlines a framework for ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and continuing negotiations over the next 60 days.
The agreement, which ended more than 100 days of conflict, has been welcomed internationally due to its potential to stabilise the region and ease disruptions in global energy markets.
Under the deal, the United States has agreed to lift restrictions on Iranian ports and waive key oil sanctions, while Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international commercial shipping. The agreement also provides for discussions on a long-term settlement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and a proposed reconstruction fund for the region.
