NEWYORK: Pakistan has called for the immediate restoration of normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz, warning at the United Nations that ongoing disruptions are severely affecting global trade, energy supplies, and vulnerable populations worldwide.
Speaking during the UN General Assembly veto debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized the need to ensure the safety of maritime routes. He stressed the importance of protecting ships and crew members while restoring the smooth and secure passage of civilian vessels through the strategic waterway.
Expressing deep concern over recent developments in the Middle East, Ahmad stated that the conflict should never have escalated to its current level, given its wide-ranging consequences. He highlighted Pakistan’s consistent focus on de-escalation and diplomacy, including its initiative to host the Islamabad Talks on April 11–12 as part of the broader “Islamabad Process” aimed at promoting ceasefire and long-term regional stability.
The envoy underscored the far-reaching economic implications of the disruption, noting that countries across the globe — including Pakistan — are experiencing adverse effects. He pointed out that interruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are impacting not only energy flows but also the supply of fertilizers and other essential commodities, thereby threatening food security, increasing the cost of living, and placing additional strain on vulnerable communities. Ahmad warned that continued military escalation would prolong human suffering and deepen economic hardships beyond the immediate region. He stressed that a return to peace and stability would serve the collective interests of all stakeholders.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance, he expressed unwavering support and solidarity with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, while also emphasizing respect for the sovereignty and security of all regional states. He further noted that Pakistan remains actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, maintaining outreach with key stakeholders including the United States and Iran, with the aim of facilitating dialogue and creating conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations.
Concluding his remarks, Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in promoting dialogue, fostering mutual understanding, and supporting initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
