BUCHAREST: Romania has commended Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in the Middle East, highlighting Islamabad’s contribution to mediation efforts that helped pave the way for a preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran and the planned reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said she held talks with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, during which he briefed her on the latest developments regarding regional mediation efforts, the US-Iran agreement, and the timeline for its formal signing.
In a statement, Țoiu thanked Pakistan for its “important mediation role” and discussed the contributions of regional partners, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye and Egypt, in supporting de-escalation efforts. She also acknowledged the continued engagement of the United Nations and the European Union in promoting regional stability.
The Romanian foreign minister said both sides reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationship between Romania and Pakistan and the spirit of dialogue that has characterized their contacts since the beginning of the Islamabad peace process.
According to Țoiu, the official signing ceremony of the US-Iran agreement is scheduled for June 19. She noted that the next phase of diplomacy would focus on further negotiations, including technical discussions related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
She highlighted Romania’s relevance in the upcoming process through its position as Vice-Governor of the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying the country could contribute to discussions concerning the nuclear file.
The Romanian minister said the diplomatic breakthrough offers a realistic opportunity to achieve shared goals, including reducing global energy prices and ensuring timely access to agricultural fertilizers, developments that could positively impact international food markets.
She emphasized that continued international coordination and engagement remain essential for maintaining regional stability, preventing further escalation and deterring armed attacks.
Țoiu also noted that Romania is participating in both a coalition coordinated by the US Department of State to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a broader European coalition involved in the initiative.
The remarks underscore Pakistan’s increasingly visible role in regional diplomacy and reflect growing international recognition of its mediation efforts in addressing key geopolitical challenges in the Middle East.
