TIJUANA, MEXICO (MNN); Iran are set to begin their FIFA World Cup campaign today against New Zealand after months of uncertainty surrounding their participation due to the conflict triggered by US-Israeli attacks on the country in late February.
The match carries added significance as it takes place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in the Middle East and in California, which hosts one of the largest Iranian communities outside Iran. The encounter will mark the first-ever World Cup meeting between Iran and New Zealand.
New Zealand, known as the All Whites, return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since the 2010 World Cup and will be aiming to secure their first victory in the tournament’s history.
Iran’s participation has drawn global attention as the country is competing in a World Cup co-hosted by a nation involved in a conflict with Tehran — a situation unprecedented in the tournament’s 96-year history.
Preparations for the Iranian team have been significantly affected by the conflict. All three of their group-stage matches are scheduled to be played in the United States, while concerns over their participation persisted until shortly before the tournament.
As a result of logistical and security considerations, Iran shifted its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, requiring the squad to travel internationally to the United States for each group-stage fixture.
Despite reports of progress in diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict, tensions surrounding the team remain high. Iranian football officials have criticised FIFA after 11 members of the country’s football federation were reportedly denied visas to attend the tournament.
Media reports also indicate that the Iranian squad is required to enter the United States on match days and leave within 24 hours of each game.
The sensitive atmosphere surrounding Iran’s participation was evident during the tournament’s opening ceremony in Los Angeles, where boos were reportedly heard as the Iranian flag was carried onto the field.
