Tehran: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has sought to distinguish between legitimate protests and acts of rioting, as the country faces renewed demonstrations over political and economic grievances.
Addressing the nation on Saturday, Khamenei emphasized that while citizens have the right to voice complaints, violent actions aimed at undermining the state will not be tolerated.“Protest is legitimate. Officials must listen to those raising concerns,” he said. “But dealing with rioters is pointless—they must be brought to justice.”
He specifically cited attacks in Tehran’s historic Grand Bazaar, which he said targeted Islam and the political system.
Khamenei also took aim at foreign powers, asserting that Iran would resist external pressure. “We will not allow the enemy to impose their policies on us. We will bring the enemy to their knees,” he declared.
Supporters attending the speech chanted slogans against the U.S., Britain, and Israel, reflecting the leadership’s continued stance against Western influence. The Supreme Leader stressed that while dialogue would be pursued with those expressing grievances, the government would confront those exploiting protests to destabilize the country.
