Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, on Thursday underscored the importance of inter-civilisational dialogue in promoting mutual understanding, cooperation, and global peace amid growing international challenges.
Speaking at a high-level event commemorating the International Day of Dialogue among Civilisations, organised by China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Ambassador Ahmad stressed that meaningful dialogue remains vital in addressing contemporary global issues.
“… At this critical juncture of history when global peace and harmony is imperiled by myriad challenges, the significance of inter-civilisational dialogue cannot be overemphasised,” Ambassador Ahmad said.
He described dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective means of overcoming differences and strengthening cooperation among nations.
The ambassador noted that throughout history, dialogue has played a key role in building trust, fostering mutual respect, and advancing shared development and progress among societies.
Highlighting Pakistan’s unique position, Ahmad described the country as “the melting pot of many civilisations and religions”, reflecting its rich cultural and religious diversity.
He also pointed out that the United Nations recognises the strong connection between dialogue among civilisations and the promotion of international peace and security.
“As a committed partner, Pakistan would continue its engagement with the United Nations and all member states for advancing our shared objectives of dialogue among civilisations, cultures and faiths, for global peace and prosperity,“ he affirmed.
The envoy further said that interfaith harmony, peaceful coexistence, pluralism, diversity, and dialogue are not only central characteristics of Pakistani society but also important principles guiding the country’s foreign policy.
Ambassador Ahmad also recalled a recent resolution jointly sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines, titled “Promotion of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace”, which was adopted by consensus at the UN General Assembly on May 20.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working with the international community to strengthen dialogue among cultures, religions, and civilisations as a pathway to lasting peace and prosperity.
