DUBAI/WASHINGTON, (Reuters): U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged Iran to “get smart soon” and sign a deal, after days of deadlock in efforts to end the conflict and a media report that the U.S. would extend its blockade of Iran’s ports.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran “couldn’t get its act together,” adding that it “better get smart soon,” without explaining what a deal would include. He has repeatedly said Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and has suggested Tehran can contact the U.S. if it wants to negotiate. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials, that Trump had instructed aides to prepare for an extended blockade of Iran’s ports to pressure Tehran. Officials said he was leaning toward continued economic pressure and restrictions on oil exports, as other options—such as renewed strikes or disengagement—carried higher risks.
Iran says it wants acknowledgment of its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes. It currently holds about 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, which could be further refined to weapons-grade levels. Iranian officials said the country could withstand the blockade, claiming it is using alternative trade routes and that the conflict is not over.
Iran’s latest proposal to resolve the war would delay nuclear discussions until the conflict is formally ended and shipping issues are addressed. However, this does not align with Trump’s demand to address the nuclear issue immediately.
U.S. intelligence agencies are also reportedly assessing how Iran might respond if Trump declares a unilateral victory in the ongoing conflict, according to officials cited by Reuters.
