ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday welcomed the latest progress under the Board of Peace towards implementing the disarmament process outlined in the Gaza Peace Plan, expressing hope that the initiative would pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
In a post on X, the prime minister praised the efforts of the mediating countries, including the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye, for advancing the peace process. He also commended US President Donald Trump’s leadership, describing the development as a significant achievement for the Board of Peace.
PM Shehbaz expressed optimism that the progress would lead to the implementation of all commitments under the Gaza Peace Plan and contribute to a credible, time-bound political process ensuring the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
He reiterated Pakistan’s support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital.
Earlier, President Trump announced that negotiations held in Cairo between mediators and Hamas representatives had resulted in a phased agreement on the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. However, a Hamas official described the agreement as only a draft, while US officials said Israel remained sceptical about Hamas surrendering its weapons.
The Board of Peace, proposed in September 2025 and formally established in January 2026, was authorised by a UN Security Council resolution to oversee post-ceasefire stabilisation efforts in Gaza. Pakistan is among the founding members of the international body, which now has a broader mandate to support peace-building in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
