MOSCOW: Russian drone strikes targeted Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa overnight, wounding at least 18 people and causing significant damage to residential and civilian infrastructure, local officials reported on Thursday. The heaviest destruction occurred in the Prymorskyi district, where high-rise and mid-rise residential buildings were hit.
According to regional authorities, the attacks sparked major fires on upper floors and rooftops, which emergency crews later brought under control. Officials said the number of casualties could rise as rescue operations continue. Among the injured is a 17-year-old boy, while two individuals remain in critical condition in intensive care. Odesa, a key Black Sea port vital for Ukrainian exports, has been repeatedly targeted throughout the ongoing war.
Earlier this week, a similar attack injured 14 people.Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched one ballistic missile and 206 drones across the country during the latest wave of attacks. Of these, 172 drones were intercepted or neutralised, while the missile and 32 drones struck 22 different locations.
In addition to residential damage, a kindergarten, shopping centre, hotel, and administrative buildings were affected. Several vehicles, including buses and cars parked in multiple areas, were destroyed or damaged. Strikes were also reported on infrastructure sites, warehouses, and a garage complex in other parts of the city.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage as emergency response efforts remain underway.
