London; Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday stated that his government has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in preventing regional conflict during a tense period between Pakistan and India.
The decision to nominate Trump was made in June, with the Pakistani government praising his “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” that helped de-escalate tensions following the India-Pakistan conflict in May. The crisis began when New Delhi, without presenting evidence, blamed Islamabad for the April 22 Pehalgam attack in occupied Kashmir. India launched airstrikes inside Pakistan, which led to retaliatory action from Islamabad.
As the situation began to de-escalate under a ceasefire agreement, President Trump publicly stated that U.S. intervention had prevented a potential “bad nuclear war” between the two nations.
During a press conference in London, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was asked about the nomination. He responded:
“Mr. Trump played a crucial role in reducing tensions between Pakistan and India and helped prevent large-scale destruction in the region.”
He further noted that Trump had also contributed to easing tensions in other global hotspots, including between Ethiopia and Egypt, and even in Ukraine.
‘Washington Visit Was Very Fruitful and Highly Successful’
Discussing his recent trip to the United States for the 80th United Nations General Assembly, PM Shehbaz described the visit as “very fruitful” and “highly successful.”
He highlighted a key moment during the visit, where President Trump co-chaired a meeting on the Gaza conflict at the UN headquarters. The meeting included participation from Pakistan, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia.
“A very constructive discussion took place,” Shehbaz said. “As a result, we may soon see positive developments, possibly even a ceasefire in Gaza.”
He condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, stating:
“Since 2023, the people of Gaza have faced severe oppression and brutality. Innocent lives including those of children, women, and young people are being lost. This level of cruelty is rare in modern times. Alhamdulillah, Pakistan has raised a strong voice at the United Nations in full solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters.”
