Web Desk (MNN) – The European Union has approved an additional €3 million in emergency humanitarian aid for communities severely affected by Pakistan’s recent floods, with priority support directed toward the hardest-hit regions of Punjab. The funds will be distributed as cash assistance, enabling vulnerable families to meet urgent needs and begin rebuilding their lives.
This fresh grant is in addition to the €1.05 million provided in September for health services, clean drinking water, sanitation and other essential facilities.
According to official figures, this year’s monsoon has impacted nearly 7 million people nationwide, leaving 2.9 million displaced. More than 1,000 fatalities have been reported, over 200,000 houses damaged and significant losses inflicted on agricultural lands and livestock.
EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, stated that the monsoon proved catastrophic for many areas, particularly Punjab, which witnessed the most severe flooding in forty years. She said people have lost homes, belongings, crops and cattle, adding that the EU’s support reflects international solidarity and will assist affected families on their path to recovery.
With the latest package, the EU’s total humanitarian assistance to Pakistan this year has surpassed €14.5 million.
