TEHRAN: The United States has issued an urgent security warning advising its citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately as nationwide protests intensify and security conditions deteriorate. The alert comes alongside Washington’s move to block access to an Iranian news outlet linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In a statement released by the US virtual embassy in Iran, American nationals were warned that protests across the country are escalating and could quickly turn violent. The advisory stressed that US citizens should not expect government-assisted evacuation and must arrange their own departure without delay.
Exit options and safety guidance
The embassy advised Americans to consider leaving Iran overland via Armenia or Turkiye where feasible. Those unable to exit were urged to shelter in a secure indoor location, ensure adequate supplies of food, water, and essential medications, and remain prepared for rapidly changing conditions. US nationals were also advised to keep mobile devices charged, maintain flexible escape plans, and stay informed as the situation evolves.
Risk of detention
The alert warned that American citizens face a significant risk of questioning, arrest, or detention by Iranian authorities. It cautioned that possession of a US passport or any visible ties to the United States could be grounds for detention. Citizens were urged to avoid demonstrations, maintain a low profile, remain vigilant, and limit unnecessary movement.
US blocks IRGC-linked news outlet
Separately, the United States blocked access to the website of Tasnim News Agency, a media outlet linked to the IRGC. The move was reported by IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency. Users attempting to access Tasnim’s website from outside Iran were met with an error message, according to
The Jerusalem Post
Fars described the action as a US “countermeasure against terrorism,” adding that the outlet remains accessible within Iran through its domestic domain.
Growing tensions
The developments come amid sustained anti-government protests, tightened internet controls, and rising tensions between Tehran and Washington. US officials have repeatedly warned of increasing risks to foreign nationals as unrest continues and communications remain disrupted. The latest advisory reflects Washington’s assessment that security conditions in Iran pose an escalating threat to American citizens, even as diplomatic and regional tensions deepen.
