DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates is set to roll out the first phase of its national passenger railway network in 2026, connecting 11 cities and regions across the country, officials said. The new rail service will link key urban centres including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah, while also extending connectivity to remote areas, particularly Abu Dhabi’s western Al Dhafra region and parts of Sharjah.
Several stations will be established in Al Dhafra, a vast desert and coastal region west of the capital. These include Al Sila’ near the Saudi border, Al Dhannah and Al Mirfa along the coast, Madinat Zayed — the region’s administrative hub — and Mezaira’a near the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the Empty Quarter desert.
In Sharjah, passenger stations are planned for Al Faya, an inland desert area, and Al Dhaid, a well-known agricultural and oasis town. According to Etihad Rail, the passenger trains will provide a modern travel experience, featuring Wi-Fi, power outlets and seating for up to 400 passengers. The service is expected to offer a faster and congestion-free alternative to road travel.
Authorities said the railway project will help drive economic growth, boost domestic tourism and enhance connectivity between the UAE’s emirates. The passenger network builds on the country’s freight rail system, which has been operational since 2023.
