The Russian Foreign Ministry has highlighted significant achievements in Russia’s foreign policy in 2025, emphasizing efforts to strengthen a multipolar world order based on international law and international cooperation. The ministry noted that decisive steps were taken to protect Russia’s vital national interests abroad, particularly in the CIS and broader Eurasian region.
Marking the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, Russia, alongside its international partners, reaffirmed its commitment to the post-war world order and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, key highlights include:
- CIS Initiatives: 2025 was declared the Year of Peace and Unity in the Fight against Nazism in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
- United Nations Engagement: Russia hosted a solemn UN General Assembly session in May at New York headquarters to commemorate World War II victims. In December, an annual resolution co-sponsored by 44 countries was adopted to combat the glorification of Nazism and neo-Nazism.
- China-Russia Relations: Comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction with China were strengthened through high-level diplomacy, including reciprocal visits by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping to Moscow in May and Beijing in September.
- Russia-US Dialogue: Political dialogue with the United States was restored after the new administration took office in January. During the Russia-US summit in Anchorage on August 15, both sides reached understandings aimed at addressing the underlying causes of the Ukraine conflict, including NATO expansion and the rights of Russian-speaking populations.
- North Korea Partnership: Relations with North Korea advanced, with DPRK assistance in liberating the Kursk Region from Ukrainian militants and supporting conditions for a return to peaceful life, in line with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty.
- Iran Relations: Russia and Iran entered a new stage in bilateral ties with the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in January, which came into force in October.
- Eurasian Integration: Progress was made in supporting regional integration, including within the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), where priorities were set for collective security, combat readiness, and an anti-narcotics strategy through 2030.
- Global Advocacy: At Russia’s initiative, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Colonialism on December 14 and the International Day for Combatting Unilateral Coercive Measures on December 4.
- Religious and Humanitarian Support: Measures were taken to protect Orthodox Christianity and other traditional Russian religions, facilitating the resettlement of foreign nationals aligned with Russian spiritual and moral values.
- Countering Disinformation: Russia intensified efforts to combat false information about the country in international media, including through cooperation with partners in the International Fact-Checking Network.
- Defence of National Interests: Russia’s firm stance against countries pursuing hostile policies reinforced the impossibility of a “strategic defeat” on the battlefield and prompted steps toward the cessation of hostilities in the Ukrainian theatre.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said these initiatives underscore the country’s continued focus on defending national interests, strengthening strategic partnerships, and promoting global stability through multilateral cooperation.
