DUBAI: Dubai International Airport retained its position as the world’s busiest airport in 2025, handling a record 95.2 million passengers, officials announced on Wednesday. The milestone reflects Dubai’s continued economic expansion, driven by rising tourism, business activity, and real estate growth.
The airport’s recovery has accelerated since the pandemic, supported by strong global travel demand and Dubai’s status as a major international hub. The city also reported a 5% increase in tourists last year, reaching 19.6 million visitors for the third consecutive record-breaking year.
Dubai International is the main base of Emirates airline, which plays a central role in the emirate’s aviation and broader economic ecosystem. According to Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, the latest figures show that record traffic has become a regular feature of operations rather than an exception.
Passenger numbers have steadily climbed over recent years—from 86.3 million in 2019 to 92.3 million in 2024, before reaching the new peak in 2025.
India was the top destination for travelers departing Dubai, with 11.9 million passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia with 7.5 million and the United Kingdom with 6.3 million. The airport connected 291 cities across 110 countries through 108 airlines.
While Dubai’s growth has strengthened its global appeal, rising congestion and living costs are creating challenges for both citizens and expatriates. In response, authorities plan to shift operations to Al Maktoum International Airport by 2032 after a $35 billion expansion project. The newer airport, located 45 kilometers from the city, is expected to become Dubai’s primary aviation hub in the future.
