DHAKA: Bangladesh’s newly elected members of parliament were sworn in on Tuesday following a historic general election that saw the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secure a decisive victory. The oath-taking ceremony of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad was held at the parliament complex in Dhaka and began with a recitation from the Holy Quran. The oath was administered by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.
According to the Election Commission, the BNP-led alliance won 212 seats, while the alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami secured 77 seats. Meanwhile, Tarique Rahman, 60, chief of the BNP and a prominent political figure, is set to take oath as Bangladesh’s new prime minister later this evening. He will assume leadership of the South Asian nation of approximately 170 million people.
