HANOI: Three Vietnamese airlines have signed agreements worth nearly $30 billion with U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing to purchase a total of 90 aircraft, as Vietnam and the United States continue negotiations on a new trade deal.
The agreements were finalized during a visit to the United States by Vietnam’s Communist Party chief, To Lam, who attended the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace — an initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at addressing global conflicts.
National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines signed an $8.1 billion agreement to purchase 50 narrow-body 737-8 jets from Boeing. The airline said deliveries are scheduled between 2030 and 2032, which will expand its fleet to approximately 151 aircraft by 2030. The carrier also confirmed it is in talks with Boeing for the potential purchase of an additional 30 wide-body aircraft valued at up to $12 billion.
Vietnam’s newly established Sun PhuQuoc Airways signed a separate $22.5 billion deal to acquire 40 787-9 Dreamliner jets.Meanwhile, budget airline Vietjet secured a $965 million financing agreement with Griffin Global Asset Management to support the purchase of six Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
Earlier this month, Vietnam signaled its willingness to increase imports of American goods after Washington announced it would maintain 20% tariffs on most Vietnamese products while lifting duties on selected items.
