Britain’s top military commander has warned that the risk of war is rising, describing Russia as an increasingly serious threat to the United Kingdom as European security deteriorates.
Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton said Moscow’s expanding military capabilities pose a direct challenge to British and regional security, urging greater preparedness amid mounting global tensions.
Speaking on the worsening security environment, Sir Richard said the sons and daughters of Britain should be ready for the possibility of war, underscoring the gravity of the current moment.
He said Russia’s armed forces have emerged stronger after four years of fighting in Ukraine, gaining combat experience and adapting to prolonged battlefield conditions. That experience, he warned, has significantly enhanced Moscow’s military effectiveness.“The Russian military is now more capable than before the war,” Sir Richard said, adding that this growing strength represents a clear and escalating threat to the UK.
Sir Richard said he shared the assessment of French Army Chief General Fabien Menden, who has also warned publicly of the possibility of war with Russia. The remarks reflect a widening consensus among NATO military leaders that Europe’s security outlook is worsening.
Describing the current period as the most dangerous of his career, Sir Richard said global instability and escalating geopolitical tensions have created unprecedented risks. He called for heightened national awareness and defence readiness, signaling a shift toward stronger preparedness as Britain and its allies confront an increasingly volatile security landscape.
