LONDON: United Kingdom forces will be allowed to board and seize ships linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” while passing through British waters, the government has announced.
A statement from Downing Street said the move is part of increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The UK has already sanctioned hundreds of vessels suspected of helping Russia bypass Western oil embargoes imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These vessels, often ageing tankers with unclear ownership, are banned from UK ports and services.
Under the new policy, the UK Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies can intercept sanctioned ships in UK waters, including the English Channel. Authorities say this will force operators to take longer routes or risk detention. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move aims to cut off revenue funding Russia’s war in Ukraine. The decision comes as the US eases some restrictions on Russian oil amid rising prices linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
The UK has sanctioned 544 vessels it believes are part of the shadow fleet, which reportedly transports about 75% of Russia’s crude oil. Following any detention, legal action may be taken against ship owners, operators, and crew for violating UK sanctions.
