Islamabad: The Rwanda High Commission in Pakistan has announced the observance of the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, urging media organizations and the international community to treat the occasion with solemnity and respect.
Observed annually on April 7, the commemoration—known as Kwibuka—honours the memory of more than one million innocent lives lost during the genocide in Rwanda. The day marks the beginning of a national mourning period, dedicated to remembrance, reflection, and solidarity with survivors.
This year’s theme, “Remember – Unite – Renew,” emphasizes the importance of preserving the memory of the victims, fostering unity among communities, and renewing global commitments to prevent genocide and mass atrocities. The theme also reinforces the call for collective responsibility in combating genocide denial and the spread of genocidal ideologies worldwide.
The High Commission highlighted that the commemoration is not only a tribute to those who lost their lives but also an acknowledgment of the role played by the Rwanda Patriotic Army in ending the genocide and laying the groundwork for national recovery and reconciliation.
In its statement, the mission stressed that Kwibuka 32 should be observed in a spirit of dignity and reflection, encouraging media outlets to approach coverage with sensitivity and awareness of the historical and emotional significance of the event.
The commemoration serves as a reminder to the global community of the consequences of hatred and division, while reaffirming a shared commitment to ensuring that such atrocities never happen again.
