WASHINGTON: Marco Rubio said the United States will “have to reexamine” its relationship with NATO after the war against Iran concludes.
Speaking on Fox News, Rubio stated that although he had long supported NATO during his time in the Senate, its value was largely tied to allowing the US to use military bases in Europe to project power globally. He warned that if NATO allies restrict access to these bases, the alliance risks becoming “a one-way street.”
Rubio added that the final decision on the future of the alliance would rest with Donald Trump.
His remarks follow actions by European countries limiting US military operations. Italy reportedly denied a US aircraft permission to land en route to the Middle East, while Spain closed its airspace to US planes involved in missions against Iran.
