(AFP): The Palestinian embassy in the United Kingdom was officially inaugurated in London on Monday during a brief ceremony, a move described by its ambassador as a “profound milestone” in British-Palestinian relations.“This is a historic moment — the inauguration of the embassy of the State of Palestine to the United Kingdom, with full diplomatic status and privileges,” Ambassador Husam Zomlot said while addressing attendees outside the building in west London, formerly known as the Palestinian Mission to the UK.
The upgrade to full embassy status follows the UK’s announcement that it would formally recognise the State of Palestine in September 2025, alongside several other countries, including Australia and Canada, amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Wearing a traditional black-and-white keffiyeh, Zomlot said the development was “not merely a change of name, but a change of direction” towards Palestinian statehood.“What a way to begin a new year, marking a profound milestone in British-Palestinian relations and in the Palestinian people’s long journey toward freedom and self-determination,” he said before unveiling the embassy’s new plaque.
“This is a day of hope and steadfastness — a reminder that peace is not only possible, but inevitable, when grounded in justice, dignity, equality and mutual recognition.”The UK Foreign Office did not immediately respond to questions on whether Britain plans to open a reciprocal embassy in the Palestinian territories .
Also speaking at the ceremony, UK diplomatic representative Alistair Harrison described the event as a “moment of hope,” calling it the start of “a step change” in bilateral relations.“I wish you, ambassador, and your team a very happy stay in what is now your embassy,” he said, offering his congratulations.
