ISLAMABAD- Pakistan on Saturday strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognise the self-declared independence of Somaliland, terming it a violation of international norms.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) denounced what it described as “attempts to undermine the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia.” The ministry added that Israel’s move threatens not only Somalia’s peace and stability but also that of the wider region.
Islamabad urged the international community to reject such actions and called for measures to prevent Israel from undermining ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. MoFA reiterated Pakistan’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as all initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace in the country.
The statement follows Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, making it the first country to do so. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans for immediate cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology, and the economy, and invited Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, to visit Israel.
Netanyahu described the recognition as being “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords.”Abdullahi welcomed the move, saying Somaliland would join the Abraham Accords, calling it a step toward regional and global peace. Separately, Pakistan reaffirmed its longstanding support for the Palestinian people, rejecting any attempts at forced displacement and advocating for a sovereign, independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
