WASHINGTON (MNN); Former First Lady Melania Trump described it as “incredible” to see her white inaugural ball gown, trimmed in black, placed on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
The gown marks the second inaugural dress she has contributed to the museum’s renowned First Ladies Collection, following her donation of the outfit worn at the 2017 inauguration.
Continuing a long-standing tradition observed by first ladies, Melania Trump formally handed over the strapless white sheath featuring bold black trim, along with a black neckpiece adorned with a reproduction of a Harry Winston diamond brooch she wore during the inaugural celebrations on January 20, 2025. The ensemble was unveiled on stage atop a mannequin before being transferred to the permanent exhibit.
In brief remarks, she reflected on the deeper meaning of the gown, emphasizing that it symbolized far more than fashion. She said the piece represented decades of learning, experience, and personal growth woven into every thread and stitch. Highlighting the sharply defined black “Z” motif across the front bodice, she noted that it evoked early memories, formative influences, and key chapters of her life story embedded within the garment’s structure.
A former fashion model, Melania Trump described fashion design as a powerful form of creative expression. She said the black-and-white palette was chosen to convey a mood rich in emotion, while the gown’s modern silhouette projected boldness, dignity, and refined elegance.
Following the ceremony, the mannequin was moved to the museum’s upper gallery and installed alongside more than two dozen gowns worn by America’s first ladies. Melania Trump and her longtime stylist and designer, Herve Pierre, visited the display case to view the final presentation.
Calling it a historic moment, she expressed pride and gratitude as the museum prepared to reopen to the public later that afternoon.
