News Desk (MNN); Iranian students continued their protests for a third consecutive day on Monday, weeks after security forces violently suppressed mass unrest that left thousands dead, while the United States considers possible air strikes against Iran.
State media reported students chanting anti-government slogans at Tehran University, burning flags at the all-women Al-Zahra University, and clashes at Amir Kabir University, all located in the capital.
A video verified by Reuters showed students at Al-Zahra University chanting slogans such as “we’ll reclaim Iran,” though the exact date of the recording could not be confirmed.
In a sign of growing tensions in the Middle East, the United States began evacuating non-essential personnel and family members from its embassy in Beirut, according to a senior State Department official.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran since nationwide protests erupted in January, warning on Thursday that “really bad things will happen” if negotiations fail.
Washington demands that Iran limit its nuclear program, which is suspected of aiming to develop a bomb, restrict missile ranges to short distances, and cease support for groups it backs in the Middle East. U.S. forces have been deployed across the region to increase pressure as Iran weighs its response amid ongoing talks.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is facing the most serious crisis of his 36-year tenure, with an economy crippled by international sanctions and widespread protests that erupted into major demonstrations in January.
On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that negotiations with the United States had “yielded encouraging signals,” even as a second U.S. aircraft carrier headed to the Middle East.
Trump has not provided detailed plans regarding any potential strike on Iran. A senior White House official told Reuters last week that there was still no “unified support” within the administration to proceed with an attack.
