KABUL (MNN); At least seven people were killed and several others injured in an explosion that rocked central Kabul on Monday, according to Italian humanitarian organisation EMERGENCY, which operates a hospital in the Afghan capital.
In a statement, EMERGENCY said that 20 people were brought to its Surgical Centre following the blast in the Shahr-i-Naw area, located near the hospital. The organisation confirmed that seven victims were dead on arrival.
Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran said the explosion occurred inside a hotel on Gulfaroshi Street in the Shahr-i-Naw neighbourhood. However, authorities did not provide details regarding the cause of the blast.
China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, quoting a hotel employee, reported that two Chinese nationals were seriously injured in the incident, while an Afghan security guard was also killed.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani said preliminary reports indicated multiple casualties, both dead and injured. He added that investigations were underway.
The Shahr-i-Naw area is considered one of the most secure parts of Kabul and is home to foreign nationals, major office buildings, shopping centres and several embassies.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, they have repeatedly pledged to ensure security, but attacks have continued, many of which have been claimed by the local affiliate of the Daesh militant group.
