Web Desk (MNN); Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny won the prestigious Album of the Year award at the Grammy Awards, while Kendrick Lamar and SZA claimed Record of the Year for their hit “Luther”.
Among other major honours, Olivia Dean was named Best New Artist, while siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas secured Song of the Year. The main Grammy ceremony was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah.
Bad Bunny, who is set to headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show next week, used his acceptance speech to strongly criticise the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. While receiving the Best Album award, he said, “Before I thank God, I want to say: ICE out!”
He added, “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are human beings, and we are Americans.”
Billie Eilish also made a pointed reference to ICE during the ceremony. Accepting Song of the Year, she said, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” referring to the historical displacement of Native American communities.
Earlier, Bad Bunny and host Trevor Noah shared a brief exchange touching on Puerto Rico and US politics. When Noah jokingly asked if he could move to Puerto Rico if things worsened in America, Bad Bunny replied, “Puerto Rico is part of America.”
Several other artists, including Kehlani and Gloria Estefan, voiced support for immigrant communities. On the red carpet, many celebrities wore “ICE out” pins, including Justin and Hailey Bieber and Joni Mitchell.
