SPORTS DESK (MNN); India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been fined by the International Cricket Council following an on-field incident during the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against New Zealand national cricket team.
The incident occurred during New Zealand’s run chase on Sunday when Arshdeep threw the ball back towards Daryl Mitchell after the batter had played it towards him.
During the 11th over, Mitchell hit the ball back down the pitch, after which Arshdeep hurled it straight toward the batter, striking him on the pads.
Mitchell reacted angrily and moved toward the bowler in protest, while Arshdeep turned away and walked back to his position without apologising, prompting the umpire to intervene and calm the situation.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav later approached Mitchell and offered an apology on behalf of his teammate.
In a statement, the ICC said Arshdeep had breached the Code of Conduct by “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner.”
As a result, the fast bowler was fined 15 percent of his match fee for the offence.
Arshdeep later apologised to Mitchell at the end of the over and again after the match, and he accepted the sanction imposed by the governing body.
Despite the brief on-field tension, India went on to dominate the final, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs.
With the victory, India became the first team in history to win the men’s T20 World Cup title for a third time.
