SPORT DESK (MNN); After defeating Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to win his maiden Australian Open title, Carlos Alcaraz said the victory meant the world to him as he reflected on his journey to completing a career Grand Slam.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Alcaraz said he had dreamed of lifting the Australian Open trophy every time he competed in Melbourne but had previously failed to go beyond the quarterfinal stage.
“This year I came here hungry and ambitious, with the mental strength to block out everything and just play good tennis,” he said, adding that winning the title felt like a dream come true.
The Spanish star also praised Djokovic’s performance in the final, calling the Serbian legend an inspiration for athletes around the world.
“What he is doing is unbelievable,” Alcaraz said. “The way he puts his body, mind and life into the sport, reaching another Grand Slam final when so many people doubted him, and then producing such great tennis, is truly inspiring.”
Reflecting on completing the career Grand Slam, Alcaraz said the experience had taught him to appreciate every moment, both victories and defeats.
“I’ve learned to enjoy every second of what I’m living, not just lifting trophies but playing tournaments, winning and losing,” he said, adding that it was an honour to see his name written in the history books.
Looking ahead, Alcaraz revealed plans to commemorate his Australian Open success with a tattoo.
“It’s going to be a kangaroo, for sure,” he said. “A small kangaroo on my leg, close to my French Open or Wimbledon tattoo. I just need to decide the exact spot.”
